Dr. Barry Leslie
Skin Cancer Doctor
MBChB (Otago), FRNZCGP, Dip. Dermoscopy, Dip. Skin Cancer Med, Dip. Skin Cancer Surgery
Barry is a full-time Skin Cancer Doctor specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of melanoma and other skin cancers.
He is originally from rural Manawatu, and completed his Medical Degree at the University of Otago in 2008, before going on to gain Fellowship of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners.
He has further completed advanced skin cancer training in New Zealand and Australia, and holds Diplomas in Dermoscopy, Skin Cancer Medicine, and Skin Cancer Surgery.
Barry is a Southern Cross Affiliated Provider and an SCCA Accredited Skin Cancer Doctor.
He has a special interest in more complex skin surgery including flap reconstruction and skin grafts, and makes every effort to ensure the best possible cosmetic outcome.
In his spare time Barry enjoys fishing, diving and exploring the outdoors with his wife and children.
Dr. Marcia Sonneveld
Skin Cancer and GP Dermatology Doctor

Marcia trained at Melbourne University Medical School graduating in 1976, and did her internship at Austin Hospital before moving to NZ in 1978. She is a Fellow of the Royal NZ College of General Practitioners.
She has always had an interest in all things related to skin. She worked as an associate with a dermatologist in Napier for twelve years and completed a Diploma in Practical Dermatology through Cardiff University in 2007, which she passed with Distinction and topped her class. She has since also completed an Advanced Clinical Certificate in Dermoscopy, and an Advanced Clinical Certificate in Skin Cancer Medicine and Surgery.
The majority of Marcia's work is now in skin cancer medicine and practical dermatology, the latter dealing with conditions such as acne, rosacea, eczema and other skin disorders.
Marcia is a Southern Cross Affiliated Provider for general dermatology and skin lesions.
Outside of medicine, she has another busy role as a grandmother of four. She also loves to read, plays the keyboard and learns Italian.
Dr. Ruud Horlings
Dr. Ruud Horlings is a Dutch trained Dermatologist who moved from the Netherlands to Hawkes Bay in 2017. He has worked as a Consultant Dermatologist at Hawke’s Bay Hospital for three years before becoming a team member of Marewa Surgery in 2021.
Dr. Horlings finished his general medical and dermatology specialist training at the University Medical Centre in Groningen (UMCG), in the North of The Netherlands. After his training he joined the dermatology staff at the academic centre for two years, before moving to New Zealand. The UMCG is an educational institution, a centre of research and the final point of referral care for patients suffering from rare or complicated skin diseases.
Although Dr. Horlings delivers the whole range of dermatological care, his special interests are skin cancer surveillance, including mole checks, and treatment.
Ruud has an adventurous mind and has done lots of travelling. This brought him and his family to New Zealand. In his free time Ruud and his family love to explore beautiful Aotearoa with their motorhome.
In his work Dr. Horlings, tries to combine professionalism with a personal and friendly touch. Most patients and colleague doctors regard him as easily contactable and approachable.
Dr. Anthony Fraser

Anthony is a skin cancer doctor who joined Marewa surgery after moving to Hawkes Bay to settle with his family. He prides himself on excellence in both the diagnosis and management of skin cancers, and brings experience from his previous work at skin cancer clinics in Auckland and New Plymouth.
Anthony completed his medical degree at the University of Otago in 2011, and then went on to finish his Fellowship of the Royal NZ College of General Practitioners. It is through his work as a GP that he came to find his passion for treating skin cancer which has led him to retrain in this specialty, completing Diplomas in both Dermoscopy and Skin Cancer Surgery.
Anthony aims to provide a high quality service to his patients by effectively treating but also education on preventing skin cancers.
Heather, Ella and Jo all assist with surgery, manage post-operative care, and are a great source of advice and support.
Cathy and Donna are our friendly receptionists. They manage the front desk, keep the practice running smoothly, and are happy to answer any questions you may have.
